ARFID persists into adulthood for some people with autism and intellectual disabilities. There is a sensory element to ARFID and it has an impact on the person’s physical and emotional wellbeing. This summit is for anyone working with adults (including adolescents) with queried or diagnosed ARFID.

Children who don’t outgrow normal picky eating, or in whom picky eating is severe, appear to be more likely to develop ARFID. Increased understanding of these two eating patterns in autism is essential. It is crucial we recognise that many young people with autism and ARFID will restrict their intake during periods of stress and anxiety, but that this does not represent a desire to be thinner or reflect a distortion about the way they look. SELECTIVE EATING OR ANOREXIA – AUTISM Avoidant Restrictive Eating Disorder behaviours are common in people with autism of all ages; people with autism typically have a narrow range of foods they feel able to eat. They may avoid certain colours, only eating yellow food, and commonly experience panic if they are asked to eat anything unfamiliar. ARFID is a pattern of eating that is common in individuals with autism and is combined with sensory sensitivity.
